New York state’s $226 billion pension fund on Wednesday pledged to reach net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions across its portfolio by 2040, placing more pressure on companies in North America and abroad to tackle climate change.

The New York State Common Retirement Fund, the country’s third-largest state pension fund, said it would first undertake a four-year review of its investments in energy companies to determine whether they are committed to transitioning into cleaner power, and it will ramp up efforts to encourage corporations to reach net zero faster…
